Bengaluru, Apr 27 (PTI) Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh Lad on Monday lambasted US President Donald Trump for sharing a social media post on birthright citizenship that described India as a “hellhole”.

The minister described Trump as “Mad Max” and claimed that being the president of the United States does not give him the right to speak about India.

“He has insulted our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), and of late, he has called India a ‘hellhole’. Mr Trump, you are a Mad Max. I know you are the President of America, but that does not mean you can say whatever you want about my country,” he told reporters at Sandur in Ballari district.

Condemning Trump’s remarks, the minister also made an inappropriate gesture towards the US President.

“I really want to condemn the way you spoke about my country. But from this platform, we stand, India, irrespective of any political party, united and say: Please, Trump, go ahead,” he added.

Trump had earlier shared a four-page transcript of remarks made by conservative podcaster Michael Savage on America’s birthright citizenship, accusing people from India and China of abusing the privilege.

The remarks drew a sharp reaction from India, which termed Savage’s comments “uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste.” PTI AMP SSK
