Lucknow, Oct 8 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said government jobs and career advancement opportunities were available to sportspersons who brought medals for the country and the state, as he urged athletes joining the police to continue their sporting careers.

Addressing a ceremony here to distribute appointment letters to 470 sportspersons selected under the skilled players quota in the Uttar Pradesh Police, Maurya said that joining government service should not mean the end of their sporting careers.

“Your game has not ended; your game is still continuing,” he told the newly recruited sportspersons, adding that they would have the opportunity to serve and protect people as police personnel while continuing to represent the state and the country in sports.

Maurya said the government had created a system under which sportspersons winning medals could receive government employment, including in the police, as well as promotions based on their sporting achievements.

“When players come after winning medals, jobs are waiting for them in the government,” he said.

The deputy chief minister said a two per cent quota had been fixed for sportspersons in government departments, including the police, and highlighted the facilities being provided for training and nutritional support.

He said several talented athletes from villages had the potential to excel at the international level if provided adequate opportunities.

Maurya also said sportspersons joining the police already possessed several qualities required for the service and would get an opportunity to demonstrate their talent.

Referring to India’s recent achievements in international sporting events, he congratulated players who were part of the gold-medal-winning teams in cricket, kabaddi and hockey.

He also recalled hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand’s association with Uttar Pradesh and said a sports university was being developed in the state in his name.

Maurya said the opportunity to join the police also comes with the responsibility of serving the people and maintaining law and order.

He congratulated the 470 newly recruited sportspersons and their families and urged them to continue winning medals for Uttar Pradesh and the country.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports and Youth Welfare Girish Chandra Yadav, DGP Rajeev Krishna, DG PAC Alok Singh and DG Police Recruitment Board S B Shiradkar were among those present at the event. PTI KIS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
