Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Apr 26 (PTI) An FIR has been registered against a police constable for his alleged involvement in the “embezzlement of Rs 27 lakh” from the West Singhbhum district treasury in Jharkhand, a senior officer said on Sunday.

West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Amit Renu told PTI that the FIR against the constable was filed at Chaibasa Mufassil Police Station in connection with the fraudulent withdrawals from the treasury at Chaibasa, the district headquarters.

“An FIR has been lodged against the constable posted at the treasury office, while a few others have also been identified for their involvement in the fraudulent withdrawals from the treasury. FIRs would also be lodged against them soon,” the SP said.

West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar had told reporters on Saturday that an investigation had begun into the illegal withdrawals from the treasury at Chaibasa.

On Saturday, Chaibasa Sadar Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bahaman Tuti conducted inspections at the district treasury.

Earlier this month, fraudulent withdrawals worth several crores were discovered across Hazaribag, Bokaro, and Ranchi treasuries, and several police personnel were arrested.

State Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore had ordered a comprehensive audit of all district treasuries in the wake of reports of fraudulent withdrawals. PTI ANB BDC
