Jalna, Oct 1 (PTI) A case has been registered in Jalna district of Maharashtra against nearly a dozen social media users on a complaint by a woman, who alleged they posted obscene and defamatory content against her after she criticised Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, police said on Thursday.

In her complaint to the police, the woman, a resident of Antarwali Sarati village in Ambad tehsil, has alleged abusive, defamatory and threatening posts against her by some users on social media platforms.

Antarwali Sarati village was the site of multiple hunger strikes by Jarange in support of his demand for reservation to Marathas in government jobs and education under the OBC category.

The 35-year-old woman said these offensive posts were triggered by her criticism of the 42-year-old activist, whose latest agitation for Maratha quota ended last month.

The FIR at the Ambad police station has named five identified and five to six unidentified social media account holders.

These social media account holders circulated posts intended to tarnish her reputation and defame her, alleged the woman.

Police said the posts were allegedly made through Facebook and Instagram accounts and contained objectionable content.

The Ambad police have registered the case under Sections 351 (criminal intimidation) and 356 (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).

Further investigation was underway under the supervision of Inspector Santosh Ghodke. PTI COR RSY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
