New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) The Iran Culture House in Delhi on Thursday held a solemn ceremony in honour of the country’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking his final journey.
Iranian local TV channels and various international networks beamed visuals of the Iranian national flag-draped coffin carrying his mortal remains being held by a large group of people, and surrounded by a sea of mourners, before it would be laid to rest.
Khamenei, who ruled Iran for the last three decades, was killed on February 28, the first day of massive US and Israeli air strikes on Tehran.
On Thursday night, the Iran Culture House — the cultural centre of the Iranian Embassy in India — held a ceremony where a group of mourners clad in black gathered to bid him the final farewell.
Cultural Counsellor, Iranian Embassy, Faridoddin Farid Asr, who also heads the Iran Culture House in New Delhi, also offered prayers during the ceremony.
A photo of the late Supreme Leader was placed in the room where the ceremony was held, and visuals of funeral processions held earlier in Iran played on a screen as prayers were offered in his honour.
The week-long funeral ceremony of Khamenei has spanned Iran and Iraq, before he will be laid to rest in his hometown Mashhad in Iran.
On July 3, Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain attended the funeral ceremony of Khamenei in Tehran and paid their respects on behalf of the government and the people of India.
Earlier, the main funeral procession in the Iranian capital was scheduled for July 6, according to Iran’s state-run media. On July 7, ceremonies were slated to be held in the holy city of Qom in Iran.
According to international media reports, funeral processions for Iran’s late Supreme Leader were held in the Iraqi city of Najaf with thousands of mourners present. PTI KND MNK MNK
