New Delhi: InterGlobe Aviation has appointed William Walsh as its new chief executive officer, 21 days after former CEO Pieter Elbers resigned due to “personal reasons” after the airline was hit by a major operational crisis.

“The board of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) today appointed Mr William Walsh as the chief executive officer, subject to regulatory approvals. Mr Walsh’s tenure at IATA comes to a close on the 31st of July, 2026, and he is expected to join no later than on the 3rd of August, 2026,” said Interglobe Aviation in a statement.

William Walsh is currently the director general of International Air Transport Association (IATA). He previously served as chief executive officer of British Airways and Aer Lingus before leading the International Airlines Group, the parent company of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling.

Walsh began his career as a pilot before transitioning into a senior management role and is considered an experienced aviation executive with a long track record in the industry. He has around 10–15 years of active flying experience as a commercial pilot and 40+ years overall in aviation.

Walsh will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of IndiGo, with a focus on initiatives to strengthen the operational performance. He will be working closely with the board of directors and the leadership team, and will also act as key adviser.

Commenting on his appointment, William Walsh said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence.”

Welcoming Walsh, Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said he was delighted to have “Willie” lead IndiGo; he added that his global experience and proven leadership make him well-suited to steer the airline’s next phase of growth in an increasingly competitive aviation landscape.

The appointment comes four months after the airline faced one of the worst crises in its history, when severe disruptions stranded millions of passengers.

Nearly 4,500 IndiGo flights were cancelled during the crisis, after which the Directorate General of Civil Aviation imposed a penalty of Rs 22 crore on the airline.

A four-member inquiry committee constituted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) found insufficient regulatory preparedness and lapses in operational planning caused the disruptions. The panel also observed that the airline had not effectively implemented the revised flight duty time limitation norms designed to regulate crew working hours and rest periods.

The episode raised concerns within India’s aviation sector about the readiness of airlines and regulators to implement the revised crew duty rules.
