Ahmedabad, Oct 23 (PTI) Bottles and cans containing illicit liquor valued at more than Rs 4 crore were destroyed in two cities of Gujarat on Friday using road rollers, police said.

Gujarat is a dry state, where the manufacture, sale, storage and consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

Liquor worth Rs 2.03 crore was destroyed in Jamnagar, while alcoholic beverages valued at Rs 2.91 crore were destroyed in Vadodara city.

“More than 54,991 bottles of liquor and beer seized under the Prohibition Act in various cases in Jamnagar were destroyed on government land using a road roller. The estimated value of the destroyed stock was Rs 2.03 crore,” said Jamnagar Rural Deputy Superintendent of Police Piyush Vanda.

The destruction of the bottles was carried out after receiving a court order and approval from the local sub-divisional magistrate, he added.

Meanwhile, Vadodara police destroyed the liquor seized in prohibition offences at police stations under Zone 4 of the city.

“A total of 80,573 small and large bottles of liquor and beer cans, seized in prohibition offences and collectively valued at Rs 2,91,15,936, were destroyed on Friday,” an official release said.

The stock of Indian-made foreign liquor seized at police stations in Vadodara city was destroyed after obtaining orders from a court, it said.

The seized property was destroyed in the presence of the police inspectors of Harni, Sama, Bapod and Karelibaug police stations, along with officials of the Prohibition and Excise Department, the release said. PTI KVM NP

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
