New Delhi: India earned another mention on late-night host John Oliver’s show ‘Last Week Tonight’, after the British-American satirist lambasted Republic TV Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for calling him an “ignoramus of exceedingly global proportions” in his prime time debate. This was in response to Oliver’s episode on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He also slammed Disney-owned Hotstar, the online platform that streams his show in India, for blocking the episode on Modi.

In his latest episode, Oliver addressed the backlash he faced in India after the Modi episode and said, “…some diehard Modi supporters, like Arnab Goswami — the Tucker Carlson (an American conservative journalist and political commentator) of India — did not enjoy”.

The episode

Oliver had, on 23 February, telecast an episode taking potshots at PM Modi’s style of governance. He had called Modi a “temporary symbol of hate” which India, the “eternal symbol of love”, does not deserve. Hotstar chose not to telecast the episode in India and Oliver also accused the streaming service of editing out his past episodes, particularly jokes involving Disney characters.

Nation wants to know

Goswami, in his prime time debate on 2 March, said that Oliver, was “a third rate TV host”, not even “smart enough to be a satirist”. He mocked the late-night host and claimed that even his “good morning” and “good evening” were written down for him by his team of researchers. He ended with a message directed at Oliver, while mispronouncing his name, “John Olivier, you embarrass yourself”.

Addressing Goswami’s criticisms, Oliver said, “I’ll give you ignoramus. I’ll even give you a third-rate TV host, my researchers assure me that’s an actual compliment. But I embarrassed myself? Who the f*** do you think you’re talking to?…I’m beyond the capacity for shame. You can’t hurt me!”

On Hotstar blocking Modi episode

Oliver also criticised the Disney-owned Hotstar for blocking the episode on Modi.

On Hotstar’s decision to take down his episode, Oliver declared that the Disney-owned company “seems to be extra sensitive about Disney references”.

“If you think you have to remove anything that reflects poorly on Disney on this show, I have some bad news for you, my friends,” he said, adding that he was the voice behind Zazu, a supporting character in Disney’s 2019 live-action remake of the 1994 animated movie The Lion King.

  1. All the communists and Islamic apologists have not seen the episode but are angry because the white masters right to declare an Indian Prine minister as bad has been questioned by an Indian.
    Shame on these educated idiots

  2. Arnab and the toilet machine that is the Indian news media is a uber thick skinned juggernaut that doesnt believe in nuances, just take a look at any one of them. John Oliver’s response is perfect. Should do more and show these kind of lowlife desi’s the mirror. Succubus bhakts be like bleating goats in here!

  6. Why is the “Print” so concerned about John… there are hel lot of things happening around you… Is it because you want someone to hurl their mediocre comments on MODI and in this case it was blocked.

  7. Mr.J.Oliver ,when you dont understand what is written in a rule and make fun of it , nothing can be more dangerous than the act. Please read 2 pages of the recent CAA act by sparing 5 minutes. Incase you find it difficult to understand the legal terminologies get a expert opinion from one of the barristers in your country.

  8. Arnab Cowsamy who sells even his mother for a hypocrite, liar and moron is the one who is shameless. Please do us a favor. Don’t promote this terrorist directly or indirectly. Thanks.

  9. Beyond shame… Spot on . Shameless is the right word. Some fact checking and objectivity can be good. Now I know this guy is just another standup comedian masquerading as a news analyzer…

    • Uh-huh…

      Just because you’re an indentured-salesperson of a cog in the innovative-PR machinery, doesn’t mean there’s a total-lack of “some fact-check and objectivity”.
I understand that The Print® will most-likely censure this comment so not just like hotstar® but every other “curated content” platform, I’ll have to self-censor: Masses are dumb[…]s!

After the clearly-expressed signs of cosmic-barrier between the bubble-universes you and your ideological-compatriots cohabitate in versus the offline-universe: Indeed. He lacks “shame” because being “shameless” is just-another ‘charade’!
Just like the primitive urge to call-out “hypocrisy” even though without it, we won’t survive even an hour in the Civilisation — and the Civilisation will soon relapse into tribes.( As it should.)

    • Not quite!

Now only if a “Dravidian-putra” like yours truly could’ve watched the video!

And “slammed”?!? More like farce-slammed for ratings.
If anything, your own “…ignorance of exceedingly global proportions..” is dripping-down! “Native” for referring to an indigenous folk of Americas?!? In […] 2020???
How typically Conservative of a shameless fella!
