Hamirpur (HP), Oct 15 (PTI) Dr Radhakrishnan Medical College here suspended nine second-year MBBS students for two weeks and fined three students Rs 50,000 each and six others Rs 25,000 each following a ragging incident involving a first-year student, officials said on Thursday.

According to the complaint filed by the first-year MBBS student from Delhi, he and other juniors were called to a senior’s rented PG room near Bhota Chowk. They were instructed to keep their eyes down while speaking to the seniors and to greet them by saying “namaste, doctor sahab”. They were also given a specific format for introducing themselves.

During the investigation, the university’s Anti-Ragging Committee recorded statements from eight junior students, including the complainant, who confirmed that the seniors had engaged in inappropriate behaviour.

A university spokesperson said the seniors denied the allegations.

While the complaint did not involve physical assault or abuse, the act of imposing such instructions upon the junior students was classified as ragging, he said.

Ramesh Bharti, principal, Radhakrishnan Medical College Hamirpur, said ragging will not be tolerated.

By taking strict action in this case, the administration sought to send a clear message to the rest of the student body, he said.

All students have been briefed on the anti-ragging regulations and should remain vigilant. They must neither tolerate nor attempt to engage in ragging, he added. PTI COR BPL ASD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
