Jammu, Oct 6 (PTI) Police have detained a “notorious” drug peddler under provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act over his alleged continued involvement in drug trafficking, officials said.

The accused has been identified as Sahil Kumar, a resident of Budwani tehsil in Samba district.

Police said Kumar has been involved in multiple cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at different police stations in Samba district for his alleged involvement in drug peddling.

He was found to be a habitual drug offender, posing a serious threat to the health and welfare of people, police said.

In view of his repeated involvement in illicit drug trafficking, police submitted a dossier along with related documents to the Jammu divisional commissioner.

Subsequently, a formal detention order was issued by the divisional commissioner, following which Kumar was detained under the PIT-NDPS Act and lodged in jail, they said.

Police reiterated that stringent action will be initiated against drug peddlers and smugglers to curb the narcotics menace. PTI AB ARB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
