Gurgaon: A 25-year-old employee of a prominent financial firm in Gurugram was “critically injured” after he was shot at in broad daylight, allegedly by a disgruntled colleague, following an argument over a change of seating arrangement at their office.

The accused, identified by Gurugram Police as Aman Jangra of Haryana’s Hisar, is absconding.

On Wednesday morning, the victim, Vishal Kumar, is said to have met his colleague Jangra at a small shop near their office in Sector 44, Gurugram. The two reportedly had a heated argument over a change in the seating arrangement in office. Vishal left the spot in anger and was walking towards the office, when Aman allegedly took out a pistol, shot him in the chest and fled the spot.

A passerby then took Kumar, a resident of Firoz Gandhi colony in Gurugram’s Sector 9, to a hospital, where he is currently being treated, said police, adding that his condition is critical.

An FIR has been registered against Jangra at Sector 40 police station, under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and section 25  (possession of prohibited arms) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

According to Gurugram Police, they rushed to the spot where Vishal was shot at, after receiving a call at around noon Wednesday. The CCTV cameras around the area are being checked to trace the accused, they further added.

“Jangra was not very happy with Vishal sitting in his chair and they argued over it Monday. It was followed by another argument Tuesday. On Wednesday, the shooting took place. We are waiting for Vishal to gain consciousness to hear his version of the events,” said assistant commissioner of police (crime) Gurugram, Preet Pal Sangwan.

This is reportedly not the first time that such an incident has taken place in the National Capital Region. According to media reports, in January, a former employee of a private company in Noida had allegedly shot at his manager for not reinstating him in the job after several requests. The company manager had fired the employee allegedly owing to his poor conduct at the workplace.

ThePrint reached Kumar’s family on call, but they requested privacy. ThePrint also reached the office where the two work on call, but received no response till the time of publication of this report.

According to police, preliminary investigation has revealed that the change in the seating arrangement in office had earlier too sparked an argument between Kumar and Jangra, Monday. Jangra was not happy with Kumar sitting in what used to be his place, they claimed.

The argument had turned bitter to the extent that despite Tuesday being his weekly off, Jangra is said to have come to office to ensure that Vishal did not sit in his chair.

“Vishal (Kumar) underwent chest surgery at the Artemis hospital Wednesday evening, but his condition is still critical,” said ACP Sangwan.

He added: “Jangra is absconding. We are in the possession of CCTV footage and have also shared his pictures with the nearby police stations. We have also informed the police in his hometown of Hisar.”

Police are conducting an inquiry with other employees of the company to understand the motive behind the incident.
