Anuj, the son of the CBI court judge Loya, held a press conference and said the doubts the family had about the death earlier have been dispelled.

Mumbai: Days after a petition related to his father’s death was among the issues raised by four Supreme Court judges at an unprecedented press conference that raised questions about the Chief Justice of India, the son of the Maharashtra judge Sunday said he had no suspicions about the death.

Anuj Loya, the son of special CBI court judge B.H. Loya, said that even other family members didn’t have any doubts about the death any more.

“I don’t have any suspicion. My family members had some doubts earlier, but now they are also clear,” Anuj told a press conference.

Loya was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, in which now BJP president Amit Shah was an accused. Loya was in Nagpur to attend the wedding of a fellow judge’s daughter when he passed away on 1 December, 2014. A month later, Shah was discharged in the case by another judge.

Anuj said recent events had been painful for the family, and appealed to the media, non-government organisations and activists not to harass them. One report said that Anuj had written a letter in 2015 seeking an inquiry into his father’s death.

When asked about it Sunday, Anuj said, “I was 17. I was in an emotional turmoil. But today, I don’t have any suspicions.”

He added that he was no one to decide whether the matter should be probed.

Anuj’s statement comes months after his grandfather, Harikishan, and his aunts told The Caravan magazine that the judge had been under immense pressure to give a verdict that favoured Shah. They had also expressed suspicions over the circumstances of the judge’s death.

The family has been unreachable since the report was published. Loya’s parents had left their family home in Gategaon in Maharashtra’s Latur district. The judge’s sisters and Anuj had kept their phones switched off.

Official records say that Loya’s death was due to natural causes. The Nagpur police maintain there was nothing suspicious about his death.
