Patna, Sep 30 (PTI) The Gandak river has breached its previous highest flood levels (HFL) at four gauge sites in Bihar, setting new records this year, according to official data of the state government’s Water Resources Department.
The river recorded 91.25 metres at Bagaha in West Champaran district, surpassing the previous HFL of 90.90 metres set on September 29, 2024, by 35 cm on Monday.
“At Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj, the level reached 64.64 metres, 28 cm above the previous HFL of 64.36 metres recorded in July, 2020. New HFLs were also recorded at Rewaghat in Muzaffarpur (55.55 m), 9 cm above the previous record, and Lalganj in Vaishali (52.19 m), 7 cm above the earlier HFL,” the department said in a statement.
The figures are up to noon on September 30, with water levels at Rewaghat and Lalganj likely to rise further.
However, the river’s water level is receding at several upper and middle reaches but continued to rise downstream in certain districts on Wednesday, including Rewaghat and Lalganj, the statement said.
At 2 pm, the river stood at 55.63 m at Rewaghat in Muzaffarpur and 52.26 m at Lalganj in Vaishali, both matching their new HFLs and showing a rising trend. At Dumariaghat in Gopalganj, the level was 64.57 m, just 7 cm below the new HFL of 64.64 m.
The river was receding at Bagaha, Thakraha, Kukraha and Dumariaghat, while mid and lower reaches including Rewaghat, Lalganj and Hajipur recorded a rising trend. The river remained above the danger level at several locations.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit East and West Champaran districts and directed officials to intensify vigilance and relief measures, even as two embankments of the Gandak River were breached in Gopalganj and Saran, officials said.
