New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Making the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) more accessible to complainants, strengthening the women’s helpline and taking suo motu cognisance of cases, wherever required, will be among the priorities of its newly-appointed chairperson Lata Gupta.
Gupta said the DCW would focus on making it easier for women to approach the body, and ensure that complaints do not remain confined to files.
“My priority is to ensure that any woman seeking justice can reach the commission without difficulty and have confidence that her complaint will be addressed,” she said.
Speaking to PTI video, Gupta said, the commission would actively pursue the resolution of complaints and, where required, take suo motu cognisance of issues affecting women instead of waiting for formal complaints.
Gupta further said she is open to seeking suggestions from former DCW chairpersons, women leaders, legal experts and others to strengthen the functioning of the commission.
She also stressed the need to strengthen the women’s helpline, saying it was important to provide immediate assistance to women facing distress, including those living in Delhi’s rural areas.
“A strong helpline will enable women to register complaints from wherever they are and ensure the commission can act on them promptly,” she said.
Asked about allegations that women’s commissions often act selectively depending on the political affiliation of those involved, Gupta said the commission was not a political platform and would deal with every complaint impartially.
“For me, a victim is a victim. The commission’s role is to ensure she receives timely justice, guidance and all possible assistance under the law, irrespective of who the complaint is against,” she said.
The DCW remained without a chairperson and members for more than two years before the new appointments were made Sunday, with BJP leader Lata Gupta named chairperson. Shyam Bala, Malti Verma, Lata Sodhi, Sanrika Sharma Jha and Renu Bhalla have been appointed as members.
