Meerut (UP), Oct 15 (PTI) Five people allegedly associated with the Anti-Corruption Social Welfare Association were on Thursday arrested for kidnapping a man and demanding Rs 50 lakh as ransom from his uncle in Meerut district, police said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar said Chhinda Singh, a resident of Kunda village, lodged a complaint on Wednesday alleging that three men travelling in a car without a number plate abducted him.

The accused later called his uncle and demanded Rs 50 lakh for his release, threatening to kill him if the ransom was not paid, the officer said.

Kumar said officials registered a case at the Parikshitgarh police station and police cracked the case within 12 hours and arrested the five accused: Monu, Ashish, Mursaleen, Iqbal and Firoz.

Police recovered the car allegedly used in the crime, five mobile phones, two identity cards and a walkie-talkie from them, he said. The investigation revealed that all five accused were associated with the Anti-Corruption Social Welfare Association, the officer added.

According to police, Monu has previous cases registered against him at the Brahmpuri and T P Nagar police stations, while Firoz has two other cases registered at the Bhawanpur police station.

Further legal proceedings against the accused are underway, police said. PTI COR ABN ASD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
