Nagpur, Oct 6 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl allegedly killed her father, a daily wager, with a cricket bat in Nagpur city, an act apparently stemming from nearly two years of continuous sexual harassment by him, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday night in an area under MIDC police station limits, they said.

The girl’s father was a 45-year-old daily wage labourer, who reportedly spent his earnings on alcohol. He frequently quarrelled with his family members and assaulted them, according to police.

He would touch his minor daughter inappropriately and make advances towards her when drunk, said police, adding this went on for nearly two years.

On Monday night, he returned home heavily intoxicated. Finding his daughter alone at home, the labourer allegedly touched her inappropriately and slapped her when she resisted, police said, quoting a complaint.

During the scuffle, the girl picked up a cricket bat and hit her father twice on the head. He collapsed and died on the spot, they said.

The frightened girl initially tried to clean the blood splattered in the home and delayed informing police. She finally called police around 12.10 am after which police detained her and registered a murder case.

The girl was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which sent her to a remand home in adjoining Amravati. PTI COR RSY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
