Kolkata, Sep 20 (PTI) The EC on Sunday completed the second randomisation of EVMs and VVPAT machines for the October 6 bypolls to Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, an official said.
The exercise was carried out by the respective returning officers through the Election Commission’s EVM Management System, allocating the machines to polling stations.
It was conducted in the presence of contesting candidates or their authorised representatives, as part of the poll panel’s prescribed procedure for deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, the official said.
Randomisation is a digital process of allocating EVMs and VVPATs to constituencies.
Commissioning of the EVMs and VVPATs is scheduled from September 29 to October 1.
The lists of EVMs and VVPATs allocated to individual polling stations, along with reserve machines, will be shared with all contesting candidates, the official said.
Only the EVMs and VVPATs allocated through the randomisation process will be used at the respective polling stations on polling day, they added.
The EC’s procedure involves two-stage randomisation, with machines first allocated to Assembly constituencies and subsequently to individual polling stations.
The elections were necessitated after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vacated the Nandigram seat and Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir vacated Rejinagar. PTI SUS MNB
