New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras continues to be the top institute in the country for the fifth consecutive year, according to the India Rankings 2023 report, released Monday, under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Published by the Ministry of Education, the report ranks higher education institutes in the country under various categories, including overall, university, college, engineering, management, medical, research, law, pharmacy, research and architecture. Two new categories — innovation and agriculture and allied sectors — have been added to the rankings from this year onwards.

For the fifth consecutive year, IIT-Madras aced the overall category, with the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bengaluru, being ranked second and IIT-Delhi coming in third spot.

IIT-Madras had been in news for the wrong reasons earlier this year, after four students allegedly died by suicide on campus.

The parameters on which institutes are ranked under NIRF include teaching, learning and resources — which cover student strength (including the number of doctoral students) and faculty-student ratio, with emphasis on permanent faculty, among others.

Another parameter is research and professional practice, which measures patents filed and quality of research at the institute.

Graduate outcomes — which measure the university examination results and number of PhDs completed — peer perception and outreach and inclusivity, are the other parameters.
