EC conspiring to keep young voters off electoral rolls, Gen Z knows lotus is now ‘loot-us’: Congress

New Delhi, Oct 3 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of conspiring to keep Gen Z voters off the electoral rolls.

The opposition party also said Gen Z clearly knows that the “lotus” has become “loot-us”.

In an X post, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, “Legal opinion and past precedent are clear: only after the annual Special Summary Revision (SSR) are first-time voters’ names included in the formal electoral roll.”

He said regular and timely SSR is key to enabling first-time voters to exercise their right, but the CEC has frozen this process since January 2024.

“One excuse being given is that the disastrous SIR is ongoing in 19 states and UTs. But this leaves 16 states and UTs where the SSR has been frozen for no reason — except to exclude young voters,” he wrote.

“In the states going to election in early 2027, there is a serious risk of Gen Z voters being unable to vote. Especially in Uttar Pradesh and Goa, where the SIR process has long been completed, and there is no fresh electoral roll being published,” the Congress leader said.

Referring to the BJP’s election symbol, he quipped, “Clearly Gen Z knows Lotus has become Loot-us.” PTI SKC RUK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
