DYFI to join Tiranga March, launches Delhi-wide campaign against alleged voter deletions

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Thursday launched a Delhi-wide campaign against the alleged deletion of eligible voters’ names from electoral rolls, demanding the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The DYFI further declared that they will participate in the ‘Tiranga March’ scheduled for Friday at Central Park, Connaught Place.

As part of the campaign, DYFI activists will visit neighbourhoods to meet voters whose names have allegedly been deleted despite them continuing to reside at their registered addresses, the organisation’s Delhi state committee said in a statement.

The organisation claimed that around 47.7 lakh names had been removed from Delhi’s draft electoral roll under the SIR process and notices issued to nearly 33 lakh voters.

It demanded that the Election Commission explain the large-scale deletions and ensure the restoration of eligible voters’ names.

DYFI Delhi state secretary Aman Saini and state president Mrityunjay Pandey said the campaign would involve identifying affected voters, collecting details of the deletions and raising the matter with the Election Commission.

Citing Shahdara as one of the areas where such cases had been identified, the organisation questioned how people who had voted in previous elections could find their names missing from the electoral rolls.

It said asking affected voters to submit Form 6 for inclusion in voter rolls was not sufficient, arguing that the Election Commission must take responsibility for the removal of names of previously registered voters and ensure that eligible citizens’ voting rights were restored.

The DYFI leaders alleged that the deletion of voters’ names, without adequate explanation or notification, undermined democratic rights.

The organisation said every eligible citizen must have an equal right to vote and called for a clear justification for any removal from the electoral rolls, along with an opportunity for the affected person to present their case.

The organisation said its campaign would continue across Delhi, demanding the withdrawal of the SIR process, restoration of eligible voters’ names and accountability from the chief election commissioner. PTI AHD AHD SKY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
