New Delhi, Aug 24 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has suspended a junior engineer for alleged dereliction of duty after a 15-year-old boy fell into an open drain in Jasola village here, officials said on Monday.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed strong displeasure and deep sorrow over the incident, a CMO official said.
Gupta had directed the chief secretary to provide information about the jurisdiction of the drain in question within an hour and suspend the guilty officer, he added.
The action resulted after the chief minister’s intervention, the official said.
Mithun, a Class-8 student, went missing on Saturday morning. A multi-agency search involving the Delhi Fire Services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was launched, but the boy could not be traced.
The search was called off late on Saturday and resumed on Sunday, with rescue teams and divers deployed in the area. Officials said the boy is believed to have fallen into the drain around 11 am while trying to retrieve a kite.
He remains missing, they added.
Following the incident, the MCD’s South East (Central) Zone suspended the junior engineer with immediate effect, saying disciplinary proceedings have been contemplated against the official for dereliction of duty.
The official has been directed to remain at the executive engineer’s office during the suspension period and will receive a subsistence allowance according to rules.
