New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) The driver of a dumper that allegedly rammed a stationary crane and an auto-rickshaw carrying workers engaged in CCTV installation, killing four people and injuring three, in southeast Delhi has been arrested, while the owner is being interrogated, an official said on Monday.
The company that owned the dumper has also agreed to provide Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the four deceased and Rs 1 lakh each to the two injured.
The accident took place between 2.30-3 am on Sunday near Kalindi Hospital in Sarita Vihar when a Delhi Traffic Police camera-maintenance team was working by the roadside, police said.
According to the FIR, the dumper, allegedly being driven rashly, rammed the pickup vehicle fitted with a sky lift from behind. The pickup then hit the auto-rickshaw parked ahead, knocking down workers who were on the lift, they said.
The driver fled the spot after the accident, abandoning the vehicle, police said.
The accused driver, identified as Vinod Kumar, 42, a resident of Etah in Uttar Pradesh, has now been arrested, a senior police officer said.
The owner of the dumper, Vikash Bhadana, proprietor of Sagar Bhadana & Co. and a resident of Faridabad, has been served a notice and is being questioned, police said.
Four people — Umesh, 23, Praveen Kumar, 35, Suraj Singh, 34, and Akash, 20 — were killed in the accident, while Anup, 26, and Khem Singh, 40, were injured. Sudhir, another worker present at the site, escaped unhurt, police said.
The deceased and injured were associated with the team engaged in maintaining or installing CCTV infrastructure, officials said.
Police said the injured are receiving medical treatment at Apollo Hospital free of cost.
Following intervention by Delhi Police, the company has agreed to provide Rs 3 lakh each to the families of those killed and Rs 1 lakh each to the injured, besides bearing their medical expenses.
Documentation is also being prepared to file compensation claims before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), police said.
All three vehicles involved in the accident have been seized and deposited in the police malkhana. A Crime Team inspected the spot and blood and earth samples were collected as part of the investigation, officials said.
Post-mortem examinations of all four deceased have been conducted and their bodies handed over to their respective families, police said.
The police are analysing CCTV footage from along Road No. 13 to reconstruct the sequence of events. Mechanical inspection of the seized vehicles has also been sought, they said.
A case has been registered at Sarita Vihar police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
