Dehradun, Oct 7 (PTI) An associate of fugitive domestic help has been arrested in connection with the theft of cash and jewellery worth lakhs from a BJP councillor’s residence in Dehradun’s Basant Vihar area, an official said on Wednesday.

The theft occurred after family members were rendered unconscious by a sedative mixed in their food.

Dehradun Superintendent of Police (City) Shekhar Chandra Suyal said four other individuals, including Bharat Thapa, who allegedly committed the theft at Amita Singh’s house near Balliwala Chowk on the intervening night of September 29 and 30, remain at large, and a search for them is underway.

He said Dinesh Sunar, 27, who was involved in the theft, was arrested from Basant Vihar Chowk on Tuesday night while he was apparently assessing the ongoing police investigation in his vehicle.

Sunar was arrested after being identified based on his appearance in CCTV footage, he said.

The police officer said that Sunar, who works as a taxi driver in Delhi, revealed during interrogation that Thapa was in constant contact with four associates and had hatched the plan for the theft along with another accused named Aditya.

He mentioned that Thapa and Aditya had committed similar acts in the past.

Citing Sunar, the SP said they stole Rs 2 lakh in cash, expensive watches, jewellery, and various other items from the councillor’s house and left Dehradun after the crime. Sunar received Rs 50,000, with the promise that the remaining share would be handed over later. PTI COR SHS
