Palakkad (Keralam), Oct 4 (PTI) Amid reports that the CPI(M) had removed Palakkad district secretary E N Suresh Babu, the party’s district leadership on Sunday confirmed that he had resigned, citing personal reasons.
There were reports that Babu had been removed from the post and former MLA V Chenthamarakshan appointed in his place at the extended district committee meeting held here on Saturday and Sunday.
After the meeting, which discussed various party matters, including the outcome of the Assembly elections, Babu, Chenthamarakshan and party leader E K Noushad addressed a joint press conference.
Chenthamarakshan said Babu had informed the party that he wanted to step down for personal reasons.
“On that basis, I have been elected as the district secretary,” he said.
He said the CPI(M) Palakkad district committee currently had 44 members, and six area committee secretaries, who were not part of the committee, had been invited as permanent members.
DYFI district president Shibi Krishna and district executive member A N Neeraj had also been included as permanent invitees to ensure youth representation, he said.
Chenthamarakshan said Babu had been elected district secretary during the 23rd Party Congress and re-elected at the 24th Party Congress.
“Since Comrade Babu has certain personal inconveniences, he informed us that he could not continue as district secretary, and it was based on this that the change was made,” Chenthamarakshan said.
Babu said he had requested to step down even before the extended district committee meeting.
He said he had served as district secretary for five years and had only one more tenure left.
“It is nowhere written that one can be changed only due to health issues. We haven’t written anything like that in our party constitution. Organisational changes are normal. It has happened before as well,” he said.
Chenthamarakshan denied that any complaint had been raised against Babu in any party committee.
“No, nothing. There are no complaints anywhere. Any interpretation can come up. When hearing any news, you all have the right to interpret it yourselves. But this is the reality,” he said.
On the CPI(M)-led LDF’s performance in the Assembly elections in the district, Chenthamarakshan said Palakkad had fared relatively better than other districts where the Left suffered heavy losses.
“Palakkad is a district that did not fall back significantly in the 2026 Assembly elections. Out of 12 seats, the Left Democratic Front was able to win seven seats. That is a matter of pride. At the same time, we lost three sitting constituencies. We have discussed it and will take the necessary steps to reclaim them,” he said. PTI TBA SSK
