Aizawl, Apr 27 (PTI) The counting of votes polled in the elections to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) was underway in a peaceful manner on Monday, with the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leading in five wards, a senior official said.

Mizoram State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana said counting began at the Aizawl deputy commissioner’s office at 8 am.

ZPM is leading in five wards, he said.

Trends for the remaining wards were not yet available.

A total of 62.77 per cent of the 2.39 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the AMC polls held on April 21.

Altogether 68 candidates, including 28 women, had contested the polls, with the ZPM, Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress fielding 19 candidates each, and the BJP nominating 11.
