Congress should introspect instead of blaming EC for its defeat: MP CM Yadav

Bhopal, Oct 8 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Thursday said the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi should introspect on why they repeatedly question the Election Commission, through whose process their party has been able to form governments in several states.

The Congress should also reflect on why it has remained weak in Tamil Nadu for a long time, why it has been out of power in West Bengal for decades, and why its support base has eroded in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Several Opposition parties led by Congress have been staging protests, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the functioning of the poll body.

“If there is distrust in the Election Commission’s process, then what is the meaning of Congress’s victory in Kerala? Congress is in power in Himachal Pradesh, where elections were held through the same democratic and constitutional process, while in Tamil Nadu, decisions regarding alliances and government participation are made based on political circumstances,” Yadav told reporters here.

It is not appropriate to hold the Election Commission responsible for Congress’s consecutive defeats in elections, the BJP leader asserted.

“The Congress party should consider why it has been weak in Tamil Nadu for a long time, why it has been out of power in West Bengal for decades, and why its support base has weakened in many states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,” he said.

The answers to these questions will not be found in blaming the Election Commission, but in introspection of the weaknesses of the party’s organisation and leadership, he remarked.

Yadav said that India is the world’s largest democracy, and the entire election process here is conducted through the Election Commission under a constitutional system.

“Questioning constitutional institutions instead of accepting electoral defeat is not appropriate for a democratic system. Attempting to create an atmosphere of chaos after repeated defeats is not in the interest of democracy,” he stressed.

The Chief Minister said that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi should introspect on his party’s performance and leadership.

Instead of blaming the Election Commission or other constitutional institutions for the continuous defeats, the Congress should focus on strengthening its organisation and building the confidence of its workers, he opined.

Yadav said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India today stands strong before the entire world.

Coming from a humble background to become Prime Minister, Modi has enhanced the nation’s prestige and established the dignity of the PM’s position, he said.

Attempts to diminish his popularity will not succeed. Congress must acknowledge its weaknesses, strengthen its organisation, and rebuild public trust, he added. PTI MAS GK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
