Gairsain (Uttarakhand), Oct 27 (PTI) The Congress on Tuesday slammed the BJP-led Uttarakhand government over the truncated two-day assembly session in Gairsain, saying the first day was spent on paying tributes and offering condolences instead of discussing pressing issues.

Earlier tributes were paid to former state chief minister, late Major General (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, and former cabinet minister late Hira Singh Bisht on the opending day of the session at Bhararisain in Gairsain.

Speaking to PTI, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya claimed that the assembly session has run barely for 60 days in the past five years.

The assembly session began on Tuesday and is scheduled to end on Wednesday.

“In the past five years, the state assembly has operated for barely 60 days, whereas rules state that in small states, the legislative assembly must function for at least 60 days in one year,” Arya said.

The Congress MLA added that in the first half of the session on Tuesday, condolences were issued.

“Today (Tuesday) condolences were issued…on the second day of the assembly, the budget will be passed, and the assembly session will be adjourned altogether. This is the irony of this state,” he said.

Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat also criticised the BJP for limiting the session to two days.

“Effectively, the assembly remains functional for one and a half days. How can people’s issues be discussed in such a short span of time? People want their issues to be raised in the assembly, but it can only happen when the session is functional for a minimum of seven days or 10 days,” Rawat told the media in Nainital.

On the opening day of the session, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tabled a Rs 7,844.18-crore supplementary budget prioritising roads, drinking water, power, urban development, and civic body finances. PTI SPY KSI
