Thane, Apr 27 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday slammed Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, without naming him, over his controversial remarks and alleged that the opposition party was harbouring “anti-national mindset”.
Earlier in the day, the BJP alleged that the legislator justified the shooting at an event attended by US President Donald Trump in Washington and was “praying for a similar attack” on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Shinde said such comparisons reflect a “bankruptcy of ideas” and that such language damages the country’s global image.
“Congress is harbouring an anti-national mindset. Comparing a world leader like PM Modi with such incidents is highly condemnable. Spreading fear is an old habit of the Congress, but they must realise that 140 crore Indians stand firmly behind the Prime Minister,” Shinde told reporters.
The Shiv Sena president said the Modi government has taken a “historic step” by bringing a bill to grant 33 per cent reservation to women in legislative bodies.
“However, the opposition INDIA bloc stalled the passage of the bill. India is rapidly becoming an economic superpower under the current leadership, and the public would teach the Congress a lesson at the right time,” he added.
The BJP shared a video of Wadettiwar who purportedly says, “As you sow, so shall you reap. Whatever one does, one has to face the consequences,” while alleging that Trump, during his tenure in the highest office, has sought to dominate other countries and has “disturbed” global peace. He allegedly went on to add that a “similar sentiment” exists in India.
Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J D Vance and other top officials were evacuated unharmed from the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association at Washington Hilton after a man armed with multiple weapons fired shots outside the hotel ballroom.
Posting a video clip of Wadettiwar’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that the Congress has gone beyond political criticism and has endorsed the attack. PTI COR NSK
