Guwahati, May 4 (PTI) Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi was trailing behind his nearest rival Hitendranath Goswami of the BJP by 19,619 votes in Jorhat assembly constituency, the Election Commission said.
The Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat polled 39,494 votes, while his opponent and sitting MLA Goswami secured 59,113 votes after 12 rounds of counting, with two more rounds left.
Gogoi is making his electoral debut in the assembly polls, while Goswami, a five-term MLA who has represented the constituency thrice as an AGP leader and twice as a BJP legislator, is seeking a third consecutive term.
The Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha had won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2024 by defeating the BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi by 1,44,393 votes.
