Aizawl, Oct 8 (PTI) Mizoram Congress chief Lal Thanzara on Thursday claimed that the party was regaining support in the state and across the country, with people looking to bring it back to power.
Addressing a programme organised by the Aizawl District Congress Committee to felicitate newly appointed Aizawl City Block Congress Committee leaders, Thanzara said the party was steadily regaining public support, and people were increasingly looking towards it for “good and just governance”.
He said the party stood by its commitments to the people, citing initiatives such as the distribution of tin roofs and implementation of the New Land Use Policy (NLUP) in the state.
Lal Thanzara, younger brother of former chief minister Lal Thanhawla, said the Congress had earlier prioritised peace and stability in Mizoram over retaining political power.
He claimed that the party’s record of fulfilling its commitments had strengthened public confidence in it.
On the national political scenario, Thanzara expressed confidence that the Congress would perform strongly in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
He also claimed that people were increasingly looking towards Rahul Gandhi as a potential prime minister.
“If the BJP remains in power until the country’s 100th year of Independence, it would be dangerous for religious minorities. The BJP government is not hesitant to do anything unfair,” the former health minister alleged.
He accused the BJP-led NDA government of undermining democratic freedoms.
Thanzara claimed that the proposed visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which was subsequently cancelled, was linked to efforts to bring the BJP and the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) closer.
He alleged that the ZPM might induct a BJP MLA into its government as deputy chief minister when Shah eventually visits the state.
The Congress leader also claimed that the country’s youth were increasingly dissatisfied over what he described as threats to democratic institutions.
He also said the Congress and its INDIA bloc partners would continue to work for free and fair elections.
After the function, Congress leaders and workers organised a march from Vanapa Hall to Congress Bhavan as part of the party’s ‘Black Day for Democracy’ observance, during which participants raised slogans against the BJP-led government and in support of Rahul Gandhi. PTI CORR MNB
