New Delhi, Oct 27 (PTI) A civil rights organisation on Tuesday sought President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention in the ongoing students’ protest at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and demanded the conduct of elections in the varsity without delay.
The protest entered the 16th day as students refused to call off their agitation despite the university’s decision to hold elections within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution.
The students maintain that the administration must announce a definite date for the polls, which have not been held since 2006, and set a timeline for approving the constitution.
The organisation, Jan Hastakshep, said a five-member fact-finding team visited the University on Monday and spoke to students.
“Jan Hastakshep strongly condemns the repressive and punitive actions being taken by the Jamia Millia Islamia University administration and Delhi Police against students who are on an ongoing hunger strike and conducting a peaceful protest demanding student union elections.
“The organisation appeals to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, to intervene immediately in the matter and direct the university administration to restore student union elections,” it said in a statement.
It added that the University administration must be directed to “draft” a constitution for the student union and conduct elections within a clearly defined timeframe.
The civil organisation also demanded the withdrawal of “punitive” measures taken against students during the movement and that no legal or administrative action be taken against them in connection with the protest. PTI NES APL
