Shimla, Oct 7 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh CPI(M) State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan on Wednesday demanded immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the country’s democracy and Constitution are under attack.

He also extended support to the protest march organised by INDIA bloc leaders and MPs in New Delhi.

Chauhan said that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has launched a severe attack on the country’s democracy through alleged ‘vote theft’, terming it one of the most shameful incidents in the nation’s history.

He said the INDIA bloc has decided to organise nationwide programs on this issue from October 2 to 8.

Chauhan also questioned the move to stop INDIA bloc MPs from proceeding towards the Election Commission’s office in Delhi.

He alleged that the Delhi Police, acting under pressure from the central government, obstructed elected MPs who were protesting democratically.

He alleged a lack of transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission and stated that serious questions are being raised regarding the Chief Election Commissioner.

Chauhan demanded that an impartial inquiry into the entire matter must be conducted, and if the law has been violated at any level, action should be taken against those responsible.

The CPI(M) leader alleged that the names of crores of voters have been removed from the electoral rolls, thereby infringing upon their right to vote.

Chauhan alleged that BJP booth-level agents in certain states are filling out forms for a large number of voters and attempting to influence specific groups, particularly Muslim, Dalit, and poor voters.

He asserted that any form of bias in the electoral rolls and the election process poses a serious threat to the democratic system.

He said that the INDIA alliance’s movement is not aimed at serving the interests of any single political party, but rather at safeguarding the Constitution, the right to vote, and the democratic system. He appealed to the people of the country to support this movement and come forward to strengthen democracy. PTI BPL APL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
