Thane, Aug 4 (PTI) BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare has urged the Maharashtra government to fast-track legal protection for wetlands and mangroves in Navi Mumbai, asserting that airport safety and wetland conservation are complementary — not competing — objectives.
In an appeal to State Environment Minister Pankaja Munde, Davkhare sought immediate implementation of a series of long-pending conservation measures, including legal protection for scientifically identified wetlands, statutory protection for mangroves, and notification of the DPS Flamingo Lake as a conservation reserve.
The BJP leader also noted that the proposal to notify the DPS Flamingo Lake as a Conservation Reserve has already been approved by a high-level committee and the State Board for Wildlife chaired by the chief minister, and urged the government to issue the final notification.
On the contentious issue of airport safety, Davkhare cited a study by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), saying scientific evidence shows that conserving wetlands around the Navi Mumbai International Airport is compatible with safe airport operations.
