Patna, Oct 27 (PTI) The Bihar government will seek funds from the Centre to remove sand and silt from farmlands and fisheries affected in the recent floods in the state, an official statement said on Tuesday.
The state Disaster Management Department (DMD) has asked district magistrates (DMs) of 22 districts to assess sand and silt deposits on flood-affected agricultural land and fisheries caused by the floods in Ganga, Son, Gandak, Kosi and other rivers.
“Acting on the chief minister’s directions, the DMD has written to the DMs of Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnia, Madhepura, Arwal, West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Supaul and Saharsa, directing them to assess sand and silt deposits on agricultural land and in fisheries affected by recent floods,” the statement said.
The department asked authorities concerned to conduct on-site inspection of the affected agricultural land and fisheries and assess the extent of sand and silt deposition.
“Based on this assessment, financial assistance will be sought in accordance with prescribed relief norms of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF),” it said.
This assistance will help restore and facilitate agricultural and fisheries-related activities in the affected areas, it added.
Around 50 lakh people across several Bihar districts were affected by the recent floods, which also damaged agricultural land and fisheries, officials said.
The worst-affected districts included Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnia, Madhepura and Araria. PTI PKD ACD
