Kolkata, May 4 (PTI) The BJP’s win in the West Bengal Assembly election on Monday saw the TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and many of her ministers losing in the election.
Mamata Banerjee lost her home turf, Bhabanipur, to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes.
Senior TMC ministers Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Firhad Hakim and Javed Khan were among a few party leaders who won the assembly elections.
Khan won the Kasba constituency in south Kolkata for the fourth consecutive term, defeating the BJP’s Sandip Mukherjee by a margin of 20,974 votes.
In the prestigious Ballygunge constituency in south Kolkata, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay won by 61,476 votes over his nearest rival, Satarupa of the BJP.
Kolkata mayor and Urban Development minister in the outgoing Mamata Banerjee cabinet, Firhad Hakim, won by over 56,000 votes over his nearest rival, Rakesh Singh of the BJP, in the Kolkata Port seat.
Hakim, a trusted lieutenant of the TMC supremo, won the seat for the fourth consecutive term.
Nayna Bandopadhyay, wife of senior TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay, won by 22,002 votes over her nearest rival Santosh Pathak of the BJP in the Chowringhee seat.
TMC’s north Bengal leader and minister Udayan Guha lost the Dinhata seat to BJP’s Ajay Ray by over 17,000 votes.
Women and Child Welfare minister Shashi Panja was defeated by BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty by 14,633 votes in Shyampukur assembly constituency. Chakraborty secured 60,248 votes, while Panja got 45,615 votes.
A three-time MLA from the Shyampukur seat in north Kolkata since 2011, Panja has been a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government since 2013, holding various portfolios, including the Women and Child Development department.
TMC’s Asansol Uttar constituency candidate and minister Moloy Ghatak, who was seeking re-election for the fourth consecutive term, lost to the BJP’s Krishnendu Mukherjee by 11,615 votes.

TMC’s Habra constituency candidate Jyotipriya Mallick, an accused in a multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal, lost by 31,462 votes to his nearest BJP rival after two rounds of counting, according to the Election Commission data.
Mallick was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2023 in connection with its probe into the money trail in the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam and spent over 14 months in custody before walking out on bail.
