New Delhi: A week after an Army Brigadier and his son were allegedly assaulted in south Delhi, the police have arrested four more people, taking the total number to six.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said the remaining accused persons—Surjit Singh, 36, Sunil Sharma, 53, Ashish, 32, Satender, 35—were arrested in connection with the assault that took place inside a residential society in Vasant Enclave on Monday night. All the four are from Mehram Nagar in Delhi.

Earlier, Satender alias Sonu, 49, and Sanjay Sharma, 56, were arrested Tuesday in connection with the case in which the Army reached out to the Delhi Police to take prompt action.

“Surjit is known to the main accused Satender and all of them were sitting together in Mehram Nagar when the latter called, regarding the quarrel in Vasant Enclave,” the DCP said Friday.

“The accused are evasive to questions. The complainant had asked the accused persons why they were drinking, and he also found a bottle of alcohol.”

The accused know each other because they reside in the same neighbourhood. When Satender had a scuffle with the complainant, he called these men for help, following which, they assaulted them.

The Brigadier and his son had objected to these people drinking in public outside their residence, according to the complaint lodged by the officer’s wife.

Thereafter, all of them went to the spot in Surjit’s car. Upon reaching there, a quarrel took place and they returned to their homes. Later, when they got to know a case was being registered, they went underground, the police said.

During interrogation, the police said, the accused revealed the issue escalated after the Brigadier’s family objected to the duo drinking inside their Mercedes car, and making loud noise in the neighbourhood.

“The accused were drunk, and the Brigadier’s family had recorded a video of the same, so we have evidence pertaining to the case as well,” a police source told ThePrint

The police have taken cognisance of the lapse pertaining to the initial handling of the complaint by the concerned police personnel, who have since been shifted to face inquiry, the source said.

In her complaint, the Brigadier’s wife had said that a call to PCR was made when the men thrashed her husband and son. A PCR vehicle arrived at the spot but “the behaviour of the policeman. Rather than taking action, the men inside the Mercedes made him speak to someone on the phone. He then went and sat inside the PCR car,” she said.

The policeman not only spoke “roughly” but also did nothing, she alleged.

On Monday evening, a case was registered at the Vasant Vihar police station under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2)(wrongful restraint), 351(2)(criminal intimidation), 79 (word, gesture, act, or object intrusion intended to insult the modesty of a woman) 191(2) (rioting) (190 (unlawful assembly) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Brigadier received treatment at the Military hospital and managed to get his medical examination done at the government hospital the next day only, the family said.

After the Army Headquarters learnt about the incident, a direction was sent to the Delhi Sub Area unit and subsequently to the Military Police to help the Brigadier.

The police, however, had clarified that medical assistance was given. “They (the family) preferred to go to the Army Hospital than the designated Safdarjung Hospital,” the DCP had said.
