Aizawl, Oct 3 (PTI) The Mizoram government will felicitate Asian Games gold medallists Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi at a function here on October 5, an official said on Saturday.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma will grace the event to be held at R. Dengthuama Hall.

A meeting chaired by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar was held here to discuss the arrangements to welcome the two hockey players.

The Indian women’s hockey team, featuring the two Mizo players, defeated China in the Asian Games final on Friday to win the gold medal.

Lalremsiami scored the lone goal of the final to help India clinch the title.

The two players are scheduled to arrive at Lengpui Airport on Monday and will be accorded a welcome there before being taken to R Dengthuama Hall at Mualpui Salem Veng, where the felicitation programme is scheduled to begin at 3 pm, the official said.

Hmar said the achievement of Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi was significant as they became the first sportspersons from Mizoram to win medals at the Asian Games.

He said the government would honour them with Rs 25 lakh each under the Sports Incentive Cash Award Scheme.

He also noted that their Asian Games triumph had secured their qualification for the 2028 Olympics.

According to the programme, the players will leave Lengpui Airport around 1.30 pm and proceed towards Chanmari through Hunthar, Treasury Square, Republic Veng and ITI Veng before reaching the felicitation venue.

People along the route have been urged to gather at various points to welcome the gold medallists.

Representatives of sports associations, the Mizoram Olympic Association, United Sports Association of Mizoram, Hockey Mizoram, Thenzawl Hockey Academy, SAI Training Centre Aizawl and Khelo India State Centre of Excellence, besides government officials, NGOs and college students, have been invited to the felicitation programme, officials said. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
