Itanagar, Oct 6 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd) on Tuesday stressed the need for sustainable urban development, efficient execution and close coordination among various agencies to make Itanagar a clean, green, safe and citizen-centric capital city.
The governor said smart urban development should go beyond creating modern infrastructure and focus on improving the quality of life of residents while ensuring environmental sustainability, an official statement said.
He said Itanagar, as the state capital, should emerge as a model urban centre reflecting Arunachal Pradesh’s growth, cultural heritage and developmental aspirations.
Parnaik reviewed the progress of key infrastructure projects, particularly roads, in the Capital Region at a meeting at Lok Bhavan here, with Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor Likha Nari Tadar, IMC commissioner Kego Jilen, Survey, Investigation, Design and Planning (SID&P) chief engineer Bini Palen, and Naharlagun PWD Highway Division executive engineer Hage Tajang.
He said all civic initiatives, including roads, sanitation, drainage, traffic management, public amenities and urban beautification, should ultimately improve the daily lives of residents and create a more liveable urban environment.
Emphasising the importance of the Hollongi-Itanagar Highway as the gateway to the state capital, the governor directed the highway division to ensure its timely repair, regular upkeep and effective maintenance so that it remains clean, safe and presentable at all times.
He also called for continuous maintenance by contractors engaged under the ‘Risk and Cost’ clause and asked the IMC to extend necessary support in maintaining cleanliness and civic amenities along the highway corridor.
Appreciating the efforts of the IMC in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, Parnaik said a clean city contributes to public health, civic pride and the overall image of the capital.
He encouraged the civic body to strengthen public awareness and community participation to make cleanliness a collective responsibility.
The meeting also reviewed the condition of highways and major roads in and around the Capital Region.
Expressing concern over stretches requiring attention, the governor stressed the need for regular maintenance and timely repairs.
He advised the concerned departments to adopt a proactive approach to infrastructure upkeep and give priority to quality, durability and effective monitoring of ongoing projects.
Well-maintained roads and highways are essential not only for better connectivity and public safety but also for promoting tourism, commerce, economic activity and emergency services, thereby contributing to the overall development of the state, the governor added. PTI UPL UPL RG
