New Delhi: The Indian Army has punished a Lieutenant General after allegations of corruption were levelled against him for misusing government funds.

“The Lt Gen was awarded a censure after a Court of Inquiry probed allegations of misuse of government funds for buying equipment worth Rs 10 lakhs for personal use,” defence sources said here. The officer was awarded the punishment on the day of his retirement from service last month, the sources said.

The case against the officer started after a Court of Inquiry was ordered by the Army Headquarters under a senior Lieutenant General to probe the corruption charges against the officer after complaints were received that he had misused government funds for buying equipment worth over Rs 10 lakh for personal use.

After the complaints reached Army headquarters, a high-level Court of Inquiry headed by a Principal Staff Officer of Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was ordered.

PSOs are the senior most Lt Gens in the Army posted at the headquarters for assisting the Army Chief in day to day functioning of the force.

Ever since Gen Bipin Rawat has taken over as the Chief of the Indian Army, he has clearly told officers and personnel that there would be no tolerance against moral turpitude and financial corruption in the force.

Several officers have also been dismissed from service and retired without pension after they were indicted in cases of corruption and moral turpitude.

  1. As Director of a large Corporate I was forced to renovate the official residence of a UPA-1 senior Cabinet Minister much to my dislike. The Ministers wife stuck to me like a leech. The company owner fixed a limit of Rs 10 lakhs but we had to finally spend Rs 25 lakhs with most of the material bought on credit and finally not paid.

  2. Why did they wait till the day of his retirement? Also why is the name not revealed if the punishment has already been meted out?

  3. Well I hope the government will go on and Punish our bureaucrats as well.
The IAS is notorious for the misuse of public funds for personal use.
What with air-conditioners, carpets and kitchen furniture for their homes these are often temporary used by relatives. One IAS relative has a fridge and expensive sofas borrowed from the home of his IAS brother in law. One IAS wife re decorates her entire house every year via government money.
The chief minister of one state on being voted out of government, stripped his whole official residence of all furniture and fitting, light bulbs, even bathroom fittings and tiles washbasins were stripped and taken away, the marble flooring in every room was dug up and sold. The cost of replacement Could have paid the yearly salary of a hundred Army generals.
Yes this general should be punished, but he is not the only one. On the top of the leadership food chain we have too many mouths in the trough. This is criminal conduct from our leaders all the while children die due to a underfunded health system, these thieves get away with our taxpayers money.
