Amaravati, May 22 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K Vijayanand on Friday said the state’s power utilities were fully prepared to handle the surge in electricity demand during the summer season.

He said the state had ensured an uninterrupted and reliable power supply even as Andhra Pradesh recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption amid severe heatwave conditions.

The Andhra Pradesh State Grid on May 21 recorded its highest-ever daily energy consumption of 288.9 million units (MU), along with an all-time peak demand of 15,016 MW during the day and 12,474 MW during the evening, marking the highest electricity load ever handled by the state power system.

The Andhra Pradesh power utilities have ensured uninterrupted and quality power supply while handling the highest electricity demand in the state’s history, Vijayanand said in a press release.

He said an uninterrupted and stable power supply was maintained across the state despite unprecedented demand through planning, continuous grid monitoring, effective load management, and optimum utilisation of available power resources.

According to officials, the Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation coordinated with the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation and distribution companies (DISCOMs) to ensure uninterrupted supply across the state.

The special chief secretary noted that the unprecedented rise in electricity demand was mainly driven by severe heatwave conditions and high humidity levels across Andhra Pradesh, with temperatures in several districts touching nearly 46 degrees Celsius.

Vijayanand said the increased use of air conditioners, cooling appliances, drinking water systems, and agricultural pump sets had significantly pushed up electricity consumption across the domestic, agricultural, industrial, and commercial sectors.

Officials said additional power was procured through short-term market purchases whenever required to maintain grid stability and ensure uninterrupted supply to households, farmers, industries, commercial establishments, and essential services during peak demand periods.

Vijayanand commended engineers, field staff, system operators, and maintenance teams for working tirelessly to ensure a reliable power supply and public convenience during the ongoing heatwave conditions. PTI MS SSK
