Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Jul 21 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha on Tuesday pitched for a shift towards prediction-based policing under “Prediction-Precaution-Prevention” or 3P approach, underlining the need for the force to gear up for emerging security challenges.
She was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day “Future-Ready AP Police Retreat”, organised to help the police prepare for evolving challenges in law enforcement.
Inaugurating the retreat along with Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, Anitha said the police should function not only as a law enforcement agency but also as a partner in the state’s development.
“The police should adopt innovative approaches suited to modern requirements and focus on preventing crimes before they occur by implementing the 3P approach,” she said while addressing the gathering.
The minister stressed the need for technology-driven strategies to tackle drug trafficking, rowdyism and crimes against women and children.
She directed officials to develop specialised teams capable of effectively dealing with emerging crimes spreading through social media.
Anitha urged officers to remain open to new ideas and technologies while continuing successful initiatives introduced by previous officers and strengthening institutional capacity.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the police must begin planning with the Swarna (Golden) Andhra 2047 vision in mind, as the nature of crime and policing is expected to undergo a significant transformation.
“If the police system had to be built afresh today, it would look entirely different from the existing police stations, conventional methods and administrative structures. We must start formulating ideas, policies and action plans now to meet future requirements,” the DGP said.
He said a majority of crimes by 2047 were likely to occur on digital platforms, requiring investigations that may not rely on traditional physical evidence.
Gupta stressed the need to strengthen advanced technologies, artificial intelligence and digital forensic capabilities, describing digital security as the foundation of future policing.
He said creating a robust digital security ecosystem for public safety would be among the key priorities for the Andhra Pradesh Police.
IPS officers from across Andhra Pradesh, along with senior officials from Fire Services, Prosecution, Prisons, Special Protection Force and the Forensic Science Laboratory, participated in the retreat.
Discussions on the opening day focused on technology in policing, human resource development, institutional reforms and strategies to prevent future crimes.
Officials and experts deliberated on cyber and technology-enabled crimes, safety of women and children, drone threats, protection of critical infrastructure, counter-terrorism, road safety, transport security, urban mobility, human resource reforms, future skills, technological modernisation, digital police architecture and disaster management.
Experts shared their views on future policing challenges, global trends in law enforcement and the growing role of technology in policing.
Officials said senior police officers would prepare an action plan during the three-day retreat, with theme-based discussions continuing on the second day.
The final report and recommendations will be submitted to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on July 23 and are expected to guide the technological strengthening of the state police system. PTI MS SSK
