Lucknow, Oct 8 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday questioned Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s visit to Ayodhya, claiming that his devotion to Lord Ram was under a “cloud of suspicion”.

Yadav visited Ayodhya on Thursday to attend a Shrimad Bhagwat Katha, where he challenged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections from the holy city.

Yadav also said that “for us, Lord Ram is the same as Lord Krishna, and Lord Krishna is the same as Lord Ram”.

Targeting the SP chief, Maurya said in an official statement, “Not offering prayers to Ramlala despite reaching Ayodhya raises questions over Akhilesh’s devotion to Lord Ram.”

“The people of the state and the devotees of Lord Ram are watching those who go to Ayodhya but do not visit the Ram temple – it means their devotion to Lord Ram is under a cloud of suspicion.

“People from not just across the country but from every corner of the world visit Ayodhya to offer prayers at the Ram temple,” Maurya said.

On Yadav’s remarks that Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are the same, Maurya said, “Then Akhilesh Yadav should go to the Krishna Janmabhoomi, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi and Kashi Vishwanath… But he will be afraid that his vote bank may slip away.” PTI AR KIS ARI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
