Lucknow, Oct 27 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav urged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday to take immediate cognisance of alleged delays in the ongoing counting of votes for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections and ensure transparent results.

In a post on X, Yadav said, “CEC Gyanesh Kumar should take immediate cognisance of alleged delay in UP MLC vote counting, ensure transparent results,” he said. The SP president alleged that the counting process was being deliberately slowed down and the Election Commission was not officially announcing the results of each round.

He also claimed that neither political parties nor the media were being provided with information about the counting process. “Do not make a mockery of democracy,” Yadav said, urging the poll panel to ensure transparency in the results.

The SP chief said party workers and office-bearers were closely monitoring the counting process and would remain vigilant until the winning certificates were issued. He warned that if district magistrates or commissioners attempted any irregularities, the party would launch a protest and file cases against them.

The UP Chief Electoral Officer’s office, when contacted, said it is verifying the allegations.

Counting of votes for 11 Uttar Pradesh MLC seats where polling took place on October 23 — comprising five graduates’ and six teachers’ constituencies — began at 8:00 am today and is underway.

The outgoing MLCs include six BJP members, three SP members and two Independent members. A graduates’ constituency is one in which only graduates of a recognised Indian university, or those with an equivalent qualification, are eligible to be enrolled on the voter rolls. Similarly, in a teachers’ constituency, only a full-time teacher at a secondary school or higher for at least three years out of the previous six years is eligible to vote. PTI ABN ASD
