New Delhi, May 19 (PTI) The future of artificial intelligence (AI) depends on the collective ability to build ethical and human-centric systems, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said on Tuesday.
Nadda was addressing the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva and speaking at the plenary session of the World Health Assembly (WHA).
Speaking on the session theme ‘Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility’, Nadda reiterated India’s commitment to “Health for All.” On the growing role of AI in healthcare, the minister said India has recently launched the Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, as he stressed the need for ethical frameworks in deploying emerging technologies.
“The future of AI depends on our collective ability to build ethical and human-centric systems,” he said.
Nadda highlighted India’s progress towards universal health coverage by citing the establishment of over 1.85 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the country.
The minister also highlighted that the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has created over 880 million unique digital health identities to facilitate longitudinal health records.
He said that Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) – which he termed world’s largest public health programme — covers nearly 600 million beneficiaries.
Nadda said the government is continuously strengthening healthcare infrastructure and emergency response capacities to address future public health challenges.
He highlighted the country’s leadership in producing affordable generic medicines and vaccines.
The minister said that under the Vaccine Maitri initiative, India supplied nearly 300 million vaccine doses to around 100 countries.
