Ahmedabad, Jul 2 (PTI) A history sheeter allegedly attacked Ahmedabad Crime Branch joint commissioner of police Sharad Singhal with a knife during questioning on Thursday, prompting the officer to fire in self defence, which left the accused injured in the leg.
Kaleem alias Kaleem Bhaiya, a resident of Isanpur here with around 25 serious cases registered against his name, was apprehended during the day on the basis of specific intelligence related to possession of firearms, an official said.
Singhal told reporters at the civil hospital post his treatment that Crime Branch inspector IN Ghasura had led a raid at a hut near Chandola Lake, leading to seizure of four country-made pistols procured from Madhya Pradesh along with live cartridges.
“A panchnama of the seizure was conducted and the accused was searched in the presence of witnesses. Since I was in the vicinity after the recovery, I went there for his interrogation. As the hut was small, only I and Ghasura entered the structure while my commando stood outside,” the JCP said.
Since Kaleem had already been frisked, no one suspected he would mount an attack, Singhal added.
“Kaleem, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, suddenly picked up a knife lying inside the hut and lunged at me. I put my hand forward to save my neck and sustained injuries on my hand. He swung the knife two or three times, causing deep cuts,” Singhal said.
When Kaleem refused to heed orders to drop the knife, Singhal said he took Ghasura’s service revolver and fired one round, which hit the accused on the leg. Kaleem calmed down only after this, the JCP added.
Both Singhal and Kaleem were taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment, an official said, adding the accused was out of danger.
Kaleem, a hardened criminal with more than 25 cases registered against his name, including offences related to illegal arms and assault, will undergo a blood test to establish if he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, Singhal said.
The senior police official said he was recovering well from the injuries sustained in the knife attack and would resume duty soon, especially in view of the upcoming Rath Yatra in the city.
Further investigation in the case is underway, Singhal said. PTI PJT PD BNM
