Chennai, Sep 8 (PTI) The month-long budget session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the TVK’s first, came to an end on Tuesday with the last two days witnessing ruckus involving the ruling party and the opposition DMK.
The House was on Tuesday adjourned sine die by Speaker J C D Prabhakar, who also presented a summary of the proceedings of the Assembly that lasted for 28 days and saw Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay make a number of statements while resolutions, including the one reiterating the state government’s stand against NEET, were adopted.
Incidentally, the entire proceedings went live on all days, a first in the history of the state Assembly, which itself became a point of debate between the DMK and the Treasury benches over the formers’ concerns about expunged matters being watched by the people.
The Assembly proceedings started on August 5 with the TVK’s maiden budget speech.
The occasional sparks between the TVK and DMK flared up on September 7,8 when remarks made by CM Vijay targeting the Dravidian party did not go down well with it. The matter led to ruckus on both days, with the DMK staging a walkout on Monday and being forcefully evicted the next day. The party protested with noisy slogans and staging a sit-in before the Speaker’s podium.
According to the Assembly sources, a total of over 10 resolutions including the one urging Centre to recognise Tamil as High Court’s principal language, to ensure official names of OBCs in census, opposition to NEET and FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026, were adopted, unanimously in most cases.
In addition, a number of bills, including making amendments in private university act, were also passed.
CM Vijay made a slew of announcements, including on the new Secretariat-Assembly complex and Rs 4,800 crore drinking water schemes across the state.
The Speaker informed the House that this year as many as 32,055 visitors witnessed the proceedings from the galleries. The number stood at 20,123 in 2025.
