An elderly woman has been selling pakodas in Assam for the last 30 years, while the flute seller is based out of Delhi. Both their businesses took a hit due to the pandemic.

New Delhi: After social media’s overwhelming response to call for help for the owner of a food stall in south Delhi, Baba Ka Dhaba, which has now been listed on Zomato for online food delivery, similar such appeals have emerged on various platforms.

A video of a 20-year-old flute seller in New Delhi, Bablu, playing the hit song Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in Lajpat Nagar has gone viral with over 90,000 views so far.

The video was posted by Ambreen Zaidi, founder of an organisation called The Changemakers that mentors and guides ex-servicemen, war widows and war orphans.

“Plz spread the word guys & try to buy something from him so that he is able to feed his family,” tweeted Zaidi Sunday.

Speaking to ThePrint, Bablu said he is from Lucknow, but currently lives near the Badarpur border with his sister and uncle’s son.

“I moved to Delhi over two years ago to sell flutes in various parts of the city,” he said. “I used to earn Rs 7,000 a month before lockdown but lately I have earned nothing. Most days I have nothing to fill my stomach with,” he added.

Bablu is currently stocked with around 600 flutes priced between Rs 400 and Rs 20,000.

Elderly woman selling pakodas in Assam

Similarly, a video of an elderly woman, Giribala Das, selling pakodas on a road in Dhubri, Assam, went viral over the weekend.

The video was posted on Instagram Friday by Vivek Jain, an active volunteer of non-profit organisation Robin Hood Army in Dhubri, with the caption: “Can we Make her Viral like ‘BABA KA DHABA’”.

The woman, aged over 85 years, has been selling pakodas for the last 30 years, and Jain claims he has seen her throughout his childhood.

The video was posted by Jain on his YouTube account last Thursday and Instagram Friday. Then it went viral on Twitter Sunday with over 1.5 lakh views.

Jain told ThePrint his organisation will be providing Das with monthly ration — 2 kg of dal, 10 kg of rice, two packets of soyabean and two packets of biscuits. He also said she is receiving assistance from NGOs and political parties in the area.
