New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday questioned the eligibility criteria and application process for the Delhi government’s Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, and alleged that the scheme’s 10-year residency requirement could exclude some women, objecting to the requirement of recommendation letters from MPs or MLAs.
The Delhi government launched the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana on Friday, under which eligible women will receive a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500. Online registrations for the scheme have begun through a dedicated portal.
Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said the residency condition and the application process should be reviewed. He questioned why applicants under the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana would need recommendations from MPs or MLAs. He urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to explain the rationale behind the requirement, saying women should not have to approach elected representatives to access benefits under the scheme.
The former Delhi minister also questioned the provision that limits eligibility to women who have resided in Delhi for at least 10 years. He said many people had moved to the capital from other states over the years and argued that the condition could exclude a section of residents.
He alleged that women who recently settled in Delhi and retained their voter identity cards from their home states could face difficulties accessing benefits.
He also criticised the government’s proposed Pink Card initiative, claiming it could affect women who have recently moved to the national capital.
The Delhi BJP did not immediately respond to the allegations.
