Aaditya backs demand for MPSC chief’s resignation; says govt shielding those behind irregularities

Pune, Oct 6 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday supported the ongoing agitation seeking the resignation of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) chairman Vivek Bhimanwar, and alleged that the government was shielding those responsible for irregularities in the recruitment body.

Addressing the protesting aspirants here, Thackeray drew a parallel between their demand for Bhimanwar’s resignation and the opposition-led agitation at the national level seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Protests seeking the resignation of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) chairman have been underway for six days in Pune over alleged irregularities in the functioning of the commission and examination-related controversies.

Demonstrations are being held for disparate demands, including an objective or descriptive format of MPSC examinations. However, the main demand is the resignation of Bhimanwar.

Thackeray said, “There are two demands. The way you are seeking the resignation of the MPSC chairman, similarly, at the national level there is an agitation for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. Both are ruining your future, but both have been backed by two kings.”

“We will take the resignation of Bhimanwar and we will remove Gyanesh Kumar for sure. We will not sit idle after removing them,” the Sena (UBT) MLA from Worli in Mumbai said.

Thackeray also alleged that industries were shutting down one after another under the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra.

He wondered whether the state could change its face when a “gang of thieves” was ruling it.

“There is a gang of thieves, vote thieves, paper thieves and ‘chanda’ (money) thieves who have sat on our heads. With them sitting on our heads, are we going to change the face of the state?” he asked.

Thackeray also referred to the detention of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying they had been arrested while seeking to meet the Election Commission.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader’s visit came amid the continuing agitation by MPSC aspirants in Pune over recruitment-related demands, including the resignation of the commission chairman. PTI SPK NP

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
