Nagpur, Oct 6 (PTI) A 35-year-old man was beaten to death by a large group of people after he was accused of taking a nine-year-old girl to his house and sexually assaulting her in Nagpur city, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday between 8 pm and 9.30 pm in an area under Pardi Police Station limits, they said.

According to police, the girl was playing near her home when the accused, identified as Narayandas Manmohandas Vaishnav, took her to his house nearby. At his house, the accused inappropriately touched the girl and sexually assaulted her.

The girl later informed her family about the incident and as news of the crime spread in the locality, a large group of people gathered and assaulted Vaishnav, who originally hails from Bhilai town in adjoining Chhattisgarh, police said.

He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Mayo Hospital, where he later succumbed, they stated.

Before the accused’s death in the hospital, a case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. PTI COR RSY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
